Cel animation refers to a series of individual two dimensional pieces of artwork that are recorded one at a time onto a filmstrip or videotape. Each drawing is slighly different from the one preceeding. When this series of drawings is projected at a high speed the eye convinces the brain that the cartoon character is actually waving his arms!

Movie film is projected at 24 frames/second; video runs at 30 fps. Therefore, the artist has the opportunity to use from one drawing per second to twenty-four (or thirty for video) to achieve the illusion of motion. The more drawings, the smoother the action. Moderate animation uses twelve to fifteen drawings per second. Fast action often requires a new drawing for every frame of film.

The main effort in a cel animation project is in the preparation of the artwork--the artist has ultimate control over every line and dab of color and can instill nuances of expression, gesture and movement to tell the story.
